What NOT To Wear To A Job Interview

So you have been invited to job interview – congratulations!

Use this opportunity to make a good impact by NOT making these common clothing mistakes.

LOSE THE BAD FITTING CLOTHES

We usually keep our ‘interview’ clothes for good occasions. However if you find that these interview clothes are not fitting as well as they should, don’t wear them. If they don’t feel good on you, they may also look ill fitting. Clothes that are too small, too tight or too short will most likely distract you from performing your best. Also continually adjusting bad fitting clothes is a bad distraction for the interviewer.

LEAVE THE CASUAL CLOTHES FOR WEEKENDS

Regardless of the job you’re interviewing for don’t make the mistake of being too casual. Leave your shorts, t-shirts, thongs and jeans for another occasion. Wear conservative clothes.

DON’T BE DISTRACTING

Sticking to the basics and not being too ‘loud’ with your clothing choices is a good idea. For women, anything too revealing such as short skirts or low cut shirts should be avoided. For men, dark or neutral clothes win over bright neon colours.

There’s a fine line between standing out and wearing something that is distracting.

EASE UP ON THE ACCESSORIES

Wearing too much make up, perfume or jewellery is not a good idea at a job interview. These can be distracting for the interviewer and work against you.

FORGET THE BODY ART DISPLAY

You may use body piercings and tattoos to express your personality, however excessive piercings and exposed tattoos may work against you in an interview. Focus should be on your skills and abilities rather than your body artwork, so cover up and remove excessive piercings.

BE CLEAN AND NEAT

It may seem obvious, however make sure your clothes are clean and not stained. Also don’t go to an interview smelling like smoke either on your clothes or body. Also if you’re a pet owner, be sure to remove any pet hair on your clothes.

A good rule to remember: if in doubt, overdress for the interview – good luck!
